Hi Mike,

I was recently diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and may be a candidate for an Autologus Stem Cell Transplant and my concern is the care of the CAP tubing and nasal paddng during an after this procedure. I currently use a Respronics machine that is 2.5 years old (model REMstar Plus M Serices Heated Humidiifier - Dom, Model #1051158. I have completed 15 round of radiaiton and one round of Cehmo and my counts are down. The main concern is infection and since the tubing and pads are moist, I wondered if there was a specific way to clean them and not degrade them at the same time. I was just retested to see if I still needed CPAP and although there is improvement after losing over 30 lbs. I have gone from 27.5 events per hou, with O2sat dropping to 70 to 20 events per hour where the O2sat stayed in the 80's. Clearly an improvment but not enough to go without it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am not Mike, but I have some ideas about your questions.  The first thing I would do is to keep the tubing and mask clean with weekly washing for the tubing and daily cleaning of the mask cushion and perhaps weekly cleaning of the entire mask.  Do not neglect the headgear.  I would also replace the tubing and filter more often than recommended, perhaps two weeks on the filter and three months on the tubing.

There are also professional disinfectants available from online retailers and perhaps your DME.

http://www.cpap.com/cpap-comfort-cleaning/cpap-cleaning.php  This is a link on cpap.com with bacterial filters, a brush for tubing and cleaners/disinfectants.

If you ue RemZzzs, Quietus liners, or Pad-a-Cheek supplies, dispose of the disposable liners daily and wash you Pad-a-Cheek liner weekly or more often if necessary

I don't think you should leave your physician, or the folks administering your therapy out of the loop, they may have some ideas.

Most of all I wish you good luck and a healthy recovery, Nancy.  And bear  in mind I am just a lay person, this should not be construed as medical advice.  I may be entirely underestimating your risk for infection.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for the advice. I am doing more frequent cleanings but have been advised not to use bleach or any harsh sustance. I am becoming immuno-compramized just from this round of chemo and it will get worse with the transplant procedure. It is a journey and thank you for your good wishes!! Nancy
