What is the professional name for a sleep doctor?

I need to search for local doctors who specialize in this, but I don't know what to search for!

Thank you.

you can search for one in your local area under "sleep specialist" at http://www.SleepSearch.com
I have seen two sleep doctors that were good- one of them is listed in the yellow pages under Physicians, Sleep Disorders.
His credentials are: Fellowhip-Trained Sleep Disorders Specialist, Director, Sleep Labs- Virginia Neurology and Sleep Centers, Diplomate, American Board of Sleeep Medicine. He is also a Diplomate, American Board of Psychiattry and Neurology.

What area are you in? Someone might have a recommendation for you, James.
Good luck,
Mary Z.
Thank you Mary.

I am in Staten Island NY.

I have to find a doctor that accepts my insurance or is willing to sign up to accept the insurance.
Thank you for suggesting the SleepSearch. Unfortunately, there isn't a single listing for anything at all in Staten Island. There are some listings for Brooklyn, NY and since my insurance plan covers Brooklyn (and other counties in downstate NY also) I might find a doctor that is covered under my insurance plan.

"Sleep Ambassadore" I believe is the correct term for a sleep specialist.
Wow, this is great and greatly appreciated.

All three of those doctors are in network for me!

Do you have a recommendation of the 3, or personal experience?

Thank you so much!

Some ideas:

It is nice when the sleep center is AASM approved and when a doc with good credentials in sleep is closely connected to the center.

You should not make the phone call yourself. Your primary doc, or someone designated by him, should. Your primary doc's staff may be able to help you figure out which locations are in-network for you.

I do not know them personally.

If it was me, and I had a primary-care doc I respected, I would let the primary-care doc choose, in case he had a working relationship or a connection to one of them as a friend-of-a-friend sort of thing. It can be advantageous for the two docs to at least be aware of mutual friends. you.

My PCP has a relationship with Dr. Fadil, one of the 3 you suggested, who is also in network for me. I just made an appointment for next week.

Wish me luck!
You can also go to www.sleepcenters.org and find a center near you!
GOOD LUCK!!!
Until a database is set up with more rural areas, it can be difficult to do a search on line for a sleep doctor. I know there aren't any listed at www.sleepcenters.org for my area.

Mike has a site in progress that hopefully will target some of the rural areas as well as urban areas. I know I have input my information on his site for the sleep clinic in our area. I encourage others to do the same to help build this useful database.

I saw Dr. Fadil yesterday.

Generally, I had a good feeling about him. He spent a fair amount of time with me, asking questions and explaining sleep apnea to me. He even drew a picture of the throat of a person with and without sleep apnea, and demonstrated what the snoring sounds of sleep apnea were, which I found quite endearing.

He suggested a two night sleep study and he asked that I bring the data card with me to the follow-up consultation with him. He also said that I would be fitted with various masks to see which one worked best for me, something which wasn't done during my initial sleep study or by the DME provider.

He also told me that many, many people with sleep apnea are never properly diagnosed because other doctors don't screen for sleep disorders. According to Dr. Fadil, on average it takes 10 years and visits to at lest 5 different doctors before someone is diagnosed with sleep apnea.

All in all, Dr. Fadil seemed to be competent, caring, and knowledgeable.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I only had a one-night sleep study the first time. Also, nobody ever read the data cards or did any other sort of follow-up at all to the sleep study.
