MRCA & infectious diseases

I am looking for advice regarding CPAP and infectious disease.  A couple weeks ago I came down with a Staph infection, or MRCA, in my nostril.  I have not used my CPAP machine since then as I have been waiting for the infection to clear up.  I am concerned that the CPAP may have been the source of infection.  If this is the case, I am concerned about going back to using the CPAP in fear of being re-infected.  Is anyone knowledgable about MRCA and whether it can be transmitted through the tubing…See More

SoClean CPAP Sanitizing Machine

Has anyone tried this machine?  If it does what it say -- fully sanitize the mask, headgear and tank -- it sounds like a real benefit and likely worth the cost.https://betterrestsolutions.com/SC1100-SoClean-CPAP-Sanitizing-Unit_p_17.htmlSee More

It has been two weeks since I received my CPAP machine .  I have been able to keep the mask on through the night since day one.  The first week I found myself waking up periodically but now have been able to sleep for 6 hrs at a stretch.  The only difficulty I am having is adjusting the mask before I fall asleep .  I am getting a blister on the bridge of my nose.  I tried a liner last night but was having difficulty with it.  Any suggestions?  Thanks, Diane

Maybe the mask is too small and need to go to a bigger face mask, have you asked your sleep tech or dr.

I am using the Resmed quattro full face mask.  The sleep tech recommended the small mask after my sleep study.

You are doing well.  Your profile doesn't say what kind of mask you are using, but there are several different liners available.  You can also put a bandaid on the site or moleskin on the mask whre it's rubbing.  Be careful, don't let that sore get out of hand.

Keep us posted.

Clare, sure, I bought some Resmed liners, a 6 pack and although they say to only use them once, you can wash them and get about 5-6 uses. I then made a template of what I need and then went to a fabric shop and got 3 ft of 50% cotton/50% poly fabric and cut out my own and they also last 5-6 uses, the next time I bought 3 ft of 50% cotton/50% licra fabric. That last me about 3 months and costs about ten dollars. As with everything to do with CPAP it is a bit of trial and error but cotton seems to be the main ingredient. I have tried using an old t-shirt but found the fabric better. One other good thing about this method is you can have any colour you want and really any fabric that your face can tolerate. Another tip, I use a FFM and a chin strap. I use the cut off pieces to make some padding for the headset on my Mirage Quattro so that doesn't touch my skin and wrap some of the pieces around where I get marks from the straps and haven't had any marks since. Just don't tell Resmed as we might put them out of business LOL (I think not).

You're welcome, good luck and let me know what they say.

Thank you everyone for your fine advice.  I visited with my sleep tech this morning.  He refitted my mask and believes that the mask size is fine but that I may be sensitive to the silicone.  I may have to switch to a non silicone lined mask.  I am thankful though;it could be worse.

Hi All:  it seems that I am going to be fitted with nasal pillows to see if that is a better fit for me.  It seems that the silicone is irritating my skin.  Hope this works.

Congratulations that you're committed to sleeping with CPAP. We always have to keep our focus on the big picture. Just today, another study of those of us with sleep apnea having silent strokes.

Most of us have to try multiple masks to get one that fits. I get a reddened area on my nose bridge from the ResMed nasal maskMirage FX. It's lessened if I keep the top strap looser. But what I am finding after being a CPAPer only 5 months, is that I have to switch off between the ResMed Swift FX pillows once my nostrils get tender to the nasal mask. Since the lanolin works on the nostrils, I've thought of using this on the nose bridge. Another thought is Pad-a-Check website for a customed bridge pad. The woman who makes the pads is another CPAPer!

Since you're within your first month, I would pursue an alternative mask if you have a DME/insurance coverage.

Thanks,  I am very committed to my therapy.  I was waking up with a numbing in my face, headaches, and sore throat.    I was really frightened by the numbing sensation in my face. All these symptoms have disappeared since I started therapy.  I was told by my endocrinologist that my testing positive for pre-metabolic syndrome was a result of sleep apnea.   I  have been treated for hypertension for the last 3 years.   I finally feel that I am on the road to addressing the underlying cause of my illnesses.   Diane.

I found the nasal pillows to work really well for me. Still, I sometimes go back to my nasal mask. There are things I like about it.

I just got a DreamWeaver cloth mask. I'll report after I've used it for a week or so since it might be an answer/solution for some.
