Henning replied to Henning's discussion Blood pressure medication and breathing.I've been given a mouthguard by my dentist. Actually my dentists have been on me for years to do this because i grind my teeth and I've been reluctant because i already use so much stuff -- CPAP, chin strap -- and because i'm worried that taking up space in my mouth with that extra piece of plastic will be counterproductive for CPAP. Anyone have any experience combining the two and can give me their feeling about it?

Permalink Reply by K. S. on January 31, 2012 at 9:26am Your practice is unique from my extensive dental experience. If 90% of sleep apnea is not diagnosed, screening should be ramped up, but in my CA community I can't see that it is. My point is that I initially had chipped teeth, then veneers, then a mouthguard, more veneers, more crowns, eventually 3 dental implants, etc...all the while I'm grinding. I'm told my teeth are " hyperkinetic". Just asking about snoring would be a start.
The lips should touch the pencil?
Permalink Reply by tim mickiewicz d.d.s. on January 31, 2012 at 10:20am the number comes from the american academy of sleep medicine...shocking. teeth being hyperkinetic implies that the teeth move, if your muscles are hyperkinetic then that needs to be treated. muscle relaxers may exacerbate sleep apnea. the pencil thing, just a guide to see if your jaw is retruded, your dentist should get it. I do have a most unique practice as there is a huge sleep /tmd population and i tend to get the tough ones. nature of the biz. tm

Permalink Reply by Greg Lees on January 31, 2012 at 6:17pm I have recently (2 months) been fitted with a plastic plate/guard for my top teeth. This followed after finding that my front teeth no longer touched . It felt like my rear bottom teeth had become larger and hit first. The Dentist said the plate would stop cracking these back teeth during the night. I wear it with my CPAP without chinstrap.
