I just saw a commercial last night on television advertising an oral appliance that is supposed to treat snoring & sleep apnea. I went onto the website & checked it out. It fails to address the following issues: Who is supposed to be monitoring the efficacy of the appliance? Will it cause the teeth to shift over time? Can it cause TMJ issues if the purchaser does not wear it properly? Can the appliance cause periodontal disease if it digs into the gums?
What the person sitting at home watching this advertisement does not realize is that you cannot self-treat OSA. A patient suffering from sleep disorders must be under the care of a physician and if they need oral appliance therapy MUST be seen and treated by a board certified dentist. The companies that sell these mail order appliances need to take responsibility in knowing they can possibly be causing harm to the public at large that is not properly educated on effective & safe treatment of snoring & OSA by a certified dental sleep professional.
