Is it common for people with Sleep Apnea to be diagnosed with Depression????

Hello......I have recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea and I was wondering if other people out there have been diagnosed with depression and are being treated with anti-depressants......

I understand that lack of quality of sleep can lead to depression, I guess I need to know that others out there are in the same boat as I am.....I would appreciate any feedback on your personal stories.

Thanks

Beejam

YES

no story just still alive and on psychotropics.

they help , note! stay on them as per your DR.
Sure seems to be, 4 out of 4 members of my family that have sleep apnea have also been diagnosed with depression at some point in their lives, in all cases prior to the apnea diagnosis.

Think about it, you don't sleep soundly, you are tired all day, all the time. Nothing is in tune. Our health gets ruined if we don't pay attention. So,,,,, YES depression is a big part of apnea. I now know that if my father would have had the study done, he would have had sleep apnea. almost everyone who snores really bad I believe, has sleep apnea. Since I have been really faithful to my machine for about two months now, I can't wait to go to bed, because I know I will go to sleep and rarely wake up. I have more energy than ever. I do beleive that I will lose weight, because of my increase in energy. It is good to start to feel good. Maybe even my high blood pressure and diabetes will go away, I do beleive that my pain from fibromyalgia is getting lesser all the time. I am all about positive thinking now. God Bless Diane from IOwa
Thank you so very much.

Trina,

Some patients on anti-depressants who start CPAP therapy can either lessen the amount of medication or get off it entirely. If there has been no change made to your meds and your CPAP therapy over the past 4 years, it may be time to do some experimentation (under medical supervision). If you've had a weight change or some other issue that might affect your CPAP pressure, that could be the issue, in that perhaps you are NOT being effectively treated.

Sounds like a good idea to me to consider another sleep study to titrate your CPAP, to be sure you're actually treating all of the apnea events.

Regarding the narcolepsy - it's relatively rare compared to apnea, but I have personally known several patients with both disorders. That does make it harder to treat your sleep issues. Find a well qualified sleep specialist and review any possible causes of your poor sleep, and discuss any possible symptoms that might point to narcolepsy, but my "guess" is that you should concentrate first on being sure the CPAP is actually being effective and then taking a look at your meds.

Not a doc, just another educated patient with my own opinion!

I have been on anti depressants for a while now and I also have sleep apnea, I have used the CPAP machine for almost 4 years now. I still have problems with sleeping , I wake up quite a few times a night,, I am very tired though out the day I have very little energy. My Dr. is testing me again. There are times during the day that I could just fall asleep , sometimes I wonder if I have Narcolepsy also, Is This Possible to have both? I am sorry I am not much help, but I do need help.

I believe that there is a direct link between BAD SLEEP and depression. BAD SLEEP is a by-procuct of apnea. Sleep is the catalyst for so many of our bodies chemical and hormonal release mechanisms. If you do not sleep well then these release cycles get all out of whack causing a chemical imbalance. This can also be the case for people that sleep during the day and are active at night.
Hello Belinda,

I too am being treated for depression. I know sleep apnea made my depression worse. Of course, I didn't know that before I was diagnosed with apnea. After being on CPAP for awhile, I started having much better days and am able to take less medication. I used to drag myself to work, come home, put my pajamas on and sit in a chair until I could stay up no longer. I didn't want to cook, clean or even go out to dinner and I LOVE GOING OUT TO EAT. Although I still don't have the energy I used too, I am able to live a normal life and am getting better and better.

Good luck to you. Brighter days are ahead.

Hello Karen:

I am happy to hear that things do get better eventually, I am looking forward to that day!!! How long have you been on CPAP before you started feeling better....I must admit I miss my old self where I could go and go, not always tired like this.....I am still new to cpap therapy, just waiting on my chin strap I am sure that will make a difference in my therapy......Thanks for sharing :)
