Dr. Oz had a couple on today (Friday, March 5) who both have sleep apnea. He had some video of the man snoring, then put both in theTruth Tube. Issues discussed were neck size, weight, blood pressure, daytime sleepiness, headaches, BMI.

He had them both take an at-home test (not shown, just the guy with a thing strapped to his head).

Results, man had 67 incidents per hour, woman had not as many but enough for diagnosis.

A Dr. whose name and credentials I did not catch, then discussed 3 steps everyone should take to determine if they have sleep apnea and what to do about it.
Step 1: Do a sleep reality check. Are you getting what you need, based on how you feel daily? You must get enough sleep for a healthy body.
Step 2:  Make lifestyle changes to reduce the physical causes of sleep apnea  (for instance, losing 10% of your body weight will reduce sleep apnea effects by 33%)
Step 3: Use CPAP to keep airways open. (They put a mask on him but didn't fit it etc)  For mild to moderate OSA, you may be able to use an appliance in your mouth at night to pull the jaw forward.

Midwest Sleep Diagnostics clinic in St. Louis MO will be setting them up with CPAP machines, and they will be back on the show at a later date, to see how they are doing.

This is my paraphrasing of what went on, it was pretty fast as is a lot of his stuff, but had all the basics. Will be interesting to see the show when they come back after receiving therapy.

Here is the link to the show, the video of the OSA segment isn't on there yet but probably will be shortly.

An awareness of OSA is a good thing and I agree with Rock that anything that helps bring sleep disorders into public awareness is a good thing

Good post Mary, we are of like mind on most of the issues.

What I think would really be good about Dr. Lite's shows on sleep issues, would be a tremendous flaming of his inaccuracies and inadequacies on the subject of SDB all across the internet forums and blogs. That would bring even more attention to SDB and get people to thinking deeper about the severity and high prevalence of the problem.

Maybe it would get Dr. Lite himself to look at the problem in more depth and feature it more often as the underlying cause of the other things he talks about - heart disease, stroke, depression, diabetes, etc.
That sounds like a wonderful idea banyon.
I used to listen to Dr Dean Edell while I ran my rural mail route - until he decided to discuss Crohn's disease. He was WAY OUT of his element. Then I listened to Rush Limbaugh when all he had to rave about was PETA and the animal rightists. Geeze, even Rush Limbaugh could be right once in awhile and he sure was and is about PETA and the animal rights idiots. But then Rush is Rush and he soon wore very, very thin - and was always way too obnoxious for my taste. That's when I started copying my old 45s and 33 LPs to tape. They made for better company on the route. And a lot of my patrons really enjoyed hearing some of the old songs. Made for some good conversations at the mailboxes. And those tapes sure made for better listening than a doctor expounding on a subject he has no expertise in!!

I think that is a lesson for 99% of our media consumption, i.e., if you have a casual interest in a topic, the "entertainers" seem to know their stuff. But if you are deeply interested and already engaged in a topic, you realize how superficial and inaccurate the media is.

Maybe forums do it better?
Today (April 19) is the follow-up Dr. Oz show on Sleep Apnea..just in case anyone can catch it for themselves.. at 3 pm CDT here where I am..ads look interesting! I'll be watching.
