Many CPAPers struggle with mask fit, and it's a fight that never ends for many.  In fact, many patients who start on the therapy abandon it when the frustration levels rise.

And it's not just the CPAP user - the bed partner also has to deal with a restless partner, noise and air blowing over them in bed.  Some recent research even suggests that bed partners suffer the same symptons and long-term poor health outcomes as their OSA bed partner.

Of course, user support groups (such as this) are a great help with tips and ideas to help find a better mask or to discuss tricks to make standard-sized masks fit better.  But isn't this a little crazy when you think about it?

If I need a hearing aid or orthotics or dentures, they are custom-made to fit me.  Why?  Because the manufacturers know that comfort is important if the patient is going to use the devices long term.  Yet with CPAP (which is a life-sustaining therapy) patients have to make do with standard sizing.

In Australia, we have had a custom-made mask option for about ten years and the TrueFIT Custom Mask is now available in the US

Surely, the future of CPAP involves removing mask discomfort from the therapy compliance equation.  And the only way to reliably get to that point is to custom make masks that comfortably fit each individual user....

Or that just me?

I agree with you.  I would love to be able to have a custom make mask!!!   It looks like they are only custom making nasal masks not full face masks.
I totally agree!  Why, it is easier to get shoes that fit then a CPAP piece of equipment.
it seems to me the most complaints i have seen and heard are from mask not fitting right and leaking so they do not use them like they should, i as of yet have not got my 2nd sleep study to be put on the cpap so i do not know what it is like but i have heard from many cpap users so we should have mask that are custom made for us !
The price was over $1,000.  I don't know how insurance coverage is.  But I do like th enasal pillows rather than a mask, so I don't know!!!
There are also only two places in the US that make the molds.  Can't remember the cities, though
You know what, though?  It's not the mask or pillows that are my problem.  It's the dang head gear!  They need to make it to specifications with MEASUREMENTS perhaps.  How hard would that be, to have a few sizes of the "hold on stuff"?   LOL

There are a few TrueFIT Custom masks in the US and there will soon be many more if the level of interest is any indication.  In these cases, the insurance companies have met the bulk of the cost following advice from the patient's sleep physician that the patient has tried and struggled with the standard options.

Let's face it, the insurance companies know that if you are not on CPAP you are going to develop other issues which will cost significantly more to treat.  Better to get the CPAP right for the best chance of long-term patient well-being.  And to keep the bean counters happy, the dollars actually stack up too.

The cities where you can be molded for one of these masks are Dallas TX and Madison WI.  Hopefully a broader network will follow, but at least this option is closer than a trip Down Under.

What is the name of the company that makes TrueFit Custom masks in Madison, Wisconsin?  I live in Minneapolis, so that wouldn't be too terribly far to check it out.

Hi Chris

We hope to expand the network to include wider coverage in the US in the coming months.  NYC will be among the locations we will establish.  We will update our website when we get something organised, but the surest way to be advised would be to sign-up for our newsletter (through our website).  Wishing you good sleep.energy.life!
