On second week of therapy and it is proving a real challenge.  First, the general discomfort with a poor fitting mask, then this cough that keeps happening after about 2 - 4 hours on the machine.  Have been told previously that I have GERD and taking meds for it really set up some nasty diarrhea problems.  Stopped GERD meds and cough went away on its own, but take Gaviscon when I really need it.  Recent weight increases, constant morning headaches and elevated blood pressure prompted my MD to prescribe sleep study and then add BP med (lisinopryl).  Now enter the BiPAP auto machine and the cough comes back with a vengence,   Not sure if it is the BP med or the GERD re-occurrence that may be brought on by the machine that is causing the problem.  Will try a few days without the BP meds to see if that helps.  Any other suggestions out there?

Hi Bill,

A few questions to get an idea whats happening in your treatment.

How soon after eating do you go to bed ?

 Have you had an endoscopy?

Do you have the head of your bed raised ( start small ) ?

Do you have a heated humidifier?  Are you using distilled water in it?

What are you cleaning your mask with?

Do you have a" Sleep Doctor" ?

Good sleep,Chris

Chris:

Unfortunately, some of my meds are prescribed to take at bedtime with food, so usually within 1/2 hour or so of going to bed, I have to eat a little something.  Endoscope was done over 6 years ago and yes, I do have GERD.  I use a craftmatic bed and have the head raised about 12"

Yes, the heated humidifier is part of the BiPap device and yes, using distilled h2o.  New mask only 3 days old, so haven't cleaneed it yet.   Pulmonologist is my my sleep doctor.  Thanks for the reply.

Bill

Do you take lisinopril at bedtime? This Bp med has been known to cause a cough. From what I have read, angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE) is responsible for the breakdown of other substances in the lungs. Lisinopril is an ACE blocker. When ACE is blocked substances can build up in the lungs. This can ultimately lead to a chronic cough.

Hi Bill,  A few more questions.

What setting is your humidifier at ?

Do you have an allergen cover on your pillow and mattress ?

Do you have an air ioniser/purifier?

Any new or old carpeting in the room you sleep in?

  Any pets ?

Things get "concentrated"  when using pap ie cooking smells (just looking for irritants)

Have you had a sonogram of your heart function?

                                                                                                       Good Sleep,Chris

Met with pulmonologist today and he is convinced lisinopril is the culprit.  He says it may take up to several weeks to disappear even though I took only 4-5 doses of lisinopril.  Changing BP meds to metropolo next week.   Thanks for everybodys comments.
Bill, I hope that works, sound like it will.  As Rock said the AcE inhibitors are notorious for causing a cough.
