MRCA & infectious diseases

I am looking for advice regarding CPAP and infectious disease.  A couple weeks ago I came down with a Staph infection, or MRCA, in my nostril.  I have not used my CPAP machine since then as I have been waiting for the infection to clear up.  I am concerned that the CPAP may have been the source of infection.  If this is the case, I am concerned about going back to using the CPAP in fear of being re-infected.  Is anyone knowledgable about MRCA and whether it can be transmitted through the tubing…See More

SoClean CPAP Sanitizing Machine

Has anyone tried this machine?  If it does what it say -- fully sanitize the mask, headgear and tank -- it sounds like a real benefit and likely worth the cost.https://betterrestsolutions.com/SC1100-SoClean-CPAP-Sanitizing-Unit_p_17.htmlSee More

Anyone else have this problem?   I have had it now for a few weeks.  I'm using a nasal mask - been on it for almost a year.  Could it be from opening my mouth in my sleep?

Any ideas?

I have a pt that"s apparently having same problem. He keeps forgetting to take his medicine.

I will mention the diflucan to him.

Thank you for sharing.

Have you tried using Acidophlus to help re-establish normal balance in the Gastro Intestinal tract?

Does the Biotene help with the thrush condition? As far as comfort?

I suggested it to one of my pt"s - but I do not think he tried it yet.

Just for the future, if this happens again, ask for diflucan. It works much faster than the mouth rinse. I get it from taking advair for asthma.

It turns out it was thrush.  I got an anti-fungal mouthrinse and it is going away.  The doctor told me to throw away any tubing I was using if it can't be sterilized.  I've been off the CPAP for a couple weeks and I'm leery about even starting again.

Don:
Some manuels suggest cleaning the water chamber and the tubing with a white vinegar solution.

For example you can do a 1:1 ratio of vinegar to water and do a quick 10 minute soak, or you can do a more diluted solution and soak for 30 min's, ie 1:3 ratio.

Many pt"s dump the water daily, use distilled water, and do the vinegar thing once a week. Some skip the soap altogether, and reportedly "never had a problem". Hope that helps :)

Thanks, Mary.  I never did have any symptoms that bothered me much, so I notice little other than it is easier to fall asleep without it.  (I routinely use melatonin, regardless.)  I have a new humidifier and tube.  Mild soap seems nothing like sterilization to me, but that is all the manual tells you about cleaning it.  :(  The thrush is better, but not gone away yet.  My mouth was bad this morning.  Bummer.

Clare,

The Biotene did help with the dry mouth, not so much with the thrush.  Thanks for the cleaning ideas!  I have been taking some probiotics as I am also a long-term sufferer with IBS.  I am still afraid the thrush/burning tongue will turn out to also be some sort of syndrome.  (Syndrome = you're screwed as we have no idea what causes it or how to help.)

I have but it doesn't help the thrush. I get in trouble when I forget to throughly rinse my mouth after using advair.

If you don't feel more relief from the mouth rinse, talk to your doc about diflucan. That is the only thing that really fixes my thrush. I get it from advair and the steroid component in it.

I doubt it. Never really tried it when I had thrush.. I periodically have to take medicine for my arthritis that causes dry mouth and I use it then.

Don, I "feel" your pain. Ever since I was put on a bi-level I've had a serious problem with dry mouth. I mean really dry mouth. I use a "high powered" humiderfier and a heated hose and I still have the problem. However, my pressure is 22. I guess thats pretty high. Because of this problem I still don't get enough sleep. The dry mouth wakes me up about every two to three hours to drink water. I wake up feeling like hell, headaches that turn into migrains and no energy what so ever. I hope you find some help for this problem, because I can't. Apria health care has been like no help for me.

You might consider buying and using a disinfectant. For example:

Luis, try the Biotene line of products for your dry mouth.  They are in the dental section.  One member takes the gel and puts a little dab with his tongue behind his front teeth where he's careful not to dislodge it and let's it disolve during the night.  I personally would use the toothpaste, the mouthwash and the gel.

Biotene works well, so does ACT and Oasis. There is also a spray found also in the toothpaste/mouthwash section that you can carry during the day. Just wanted to reiterate what zollistar said about cleaning your gear. If you don't clean it after every use til you are free of thrush and I'd do it for several days afterwards, no telling how long those nasty germs stick around. What will happen if you don't is that you will keep reinfecting yourself. And get the diflucan. It works in a day, max two.

to disinfect first degrease product as bacteria  can live under the grease and grease is not removed by vinegar once the grease is removed then use vinegar to kill bacteria
