MRCA & infectious diseases

I am looking for advice regarding CPAP and infectious disease.  A couple weeks ago I came down with a Staph infection, or MRCA, in my nostril.  I have not used my CPAP machine since then as I have been waiting for the infection to clear up.  I am concerned that the CPAP may have been the source of infection.  If this is the case, I am concerned about going back to using the CPAP in fear of being re-infected.  Is anyone knowledgable about MRCA and whether it can be transmitted through the tubing…See More

SoClean CPAP Sanitizing Machine

Has anyone tried this machine?  If it does what it say -- fully sanitize the mask, headgear and tank -- it sounds like a real benefit and likely worth the cost.https://betterrestsolutions.com/SC1100-SoClean-CPAP-Sanitizing-Unit_p_17.htmlSee More

Anyone else have this problem?   I have had it now for a few weeks.  I'm using a nasal mask - been on it for almost a year.  Could it be from opening my mouth in my sleep?

Any ideas?

Do you use a humidifier? Does your machine come equipped. If so, try using it on a setting mid range. If that helps even the least little bit but not enuff, go ahead and up the humidity.

Thanks, Lynn.  Yes, I have a humidifier.  I'll give it a shot.

Don, I wear a total face mask and use humidity at 2, I've never had the problem of a burning tongue or sore mouth.  Is there a chance you could have picked up thrush (candida)?  Do you have a white coating on your tongue or inside youir mouth?

Keep us posted, please, on how it goes.

Now you're freakin me!

Don't be freaked. My thrush doesn't burn though. I use advair for asthma and the steroid part gives me thrush on occassion. As long as you aren't using an inhaled steroid of any kind, it's unlikely you have thrush.

No steroids, and my tongue doesn't really look like the thrush pics I have seen.  It's gotten a little better the last couple days.  Could it really be just a bad dry mouth?

Could be just severely dry membranes.  If it continues Biotene makes a line of dental products for dry mouths.

Thanks!  I hadn't heard of them.

It turns out it was thrush.  I got an anti-fungal mouthrinse and it is going away.  The doctor told me to throw away any tubing I was using if it can't be sterilized.  I've been off the CPAP for a couple weeks and I'm leery about even starting again.

Glad you found out what was going on and are getting treated. Did the doc think the thrush was cause by CPAP?  I hope you have, or can get a new hose.  Cleaning your mask shouldn't be a problem.  Please don't stop your CPAP because of this one case of thrush.  If it happens again you'll have to do more investigating on what could be causing the problem.  Meanwhile I would be fastidious about cleaning my mask, tubing, and humidifier chamber.   Be sure you finish the medicine, don't stop when it gets better. Keep us posted.

By the way, how do you feel being off the CPAP?

Thanks, Mary.  I never did have any symptoms that bothered me much, so I notice little other than it is easier to fall asleep without it.  (I routinely use melatonin, regardless.)  I have a new humidifier and tube.  Mild soap seems nothing like sterilization to me, but that is all the manual tells you about cleaning it.  :(  The thrush is better, but not gone away yet.  My mouth was bad this morning.  Bummer.

Just for the future, if this happens again, ask for diflucan. It works much faster than the mouth rinse. I get it from taking advair for asthma.
