Several recent discussions have indicated a need to increase the public’s awareness to Sleep Apnea and the untreated dangers. While chatting with several other sufferers, I asked about the idea of a “Bumper Sticker” to which would help getting the word out. The idea is in its infancy, but I would like to see what the response might be.

I would like to get input from everyone.

Remember, it is a bumper sticker, not a billboard. I would like to reference a web site where additional information can be obtained.

We want to direct a sufferer to more information, not sell them a brand.

Some of the ideas bantered so far:

APNEA – IT WILL LEAVE YOU BREATHLESS

CPAP ON TAP

GOT IT ???? SLEEP APNEA !!!!!

MY CPAP IS GOOD IN BED

NOT SLEEPING WELL ? ASK YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT SLEEP APNEA

WAKE UP !!! YOU MIGHT HAVE SLEEP APNEA

I want to hear your thoughts and ideas. Then we can proceed to the next step.

I think the simpler the better -- at least initially.

As forum members we know the lingo and make the connection, but our target group probably won't know. If we want to raise awareness of sleep apnea, it must be taken seriously and have a common denominator -- a simple message that gets the point across.

You don't want to have people shaking their heads wondering what the message is about. Keep in mind these will be seen while driving, waiting at stop lights, etc. and so it needs to be easily understood. Have you ever read a personalized license plate and shake your head cause you don't know what it means? Obviously they know what it means or they wouldn't pay extra for it.

Having sleepguide.com on it makes sense so that there is a reference point.

Anyone thought of the cost issues? The business end of it?
Carol,
I agree. The target group doesn’t yet know the phraseology.

Right now, I want to put together a database of phrases and then whittle them down to a smaller group of finalists, with the help of the members. Then I want to do a presentation and solicit layout input. Then we go for a winner(s). Next comes the logistics.

That is my plan, but the members speak louder than the individual.

Dan it would be interesting to do a survey.

Make up a your list and then ask nonusers what they mean. It is pointless if the message isn't understood so I would think it would make sense to poll nonhoseheads to see if they understand the message.
CPAP ...SLEEP HAPPENS
SleepyCarol,
Is the goal is to get the word out rather than to make money and sell the bumper stickers? (I guess I am not clear.) Then Zazzle.com allows regular people to make t-shirts, mugs, bumper stickers, hats, shoes, aprons, bags... etc, with no cost to the customer but just what you order. So everyone can order what ever they want. Even just one bumper sticker. There is no set up fee and it is very easy to use. If the members of the forum all want to use the SleepGuide logo then it could be posed as a bmp or jepg file so the other member can access it. I have been a designer for 30 years, and I believe that this is a very easy way to make a bumper sticker so everyone can have what they want. :>D Just a suggestion. Smiles.

Hi, Dan. As we discussed elsewhere, this is a great idea, and there have been some good suggestions so far.

Simple is definitely the way to go, IMO, especially since the target audience is ignorant about apnea. Terms that we're familiar with (like "CPAP") won't mean anything to the average person. Perhaps something like:

"ALWAYS TIRED? You might have SLEEP APNEA."
(And then add the forum name so people are encouraged to investigate further.)
TIRED? NODDING OFF?
You might need a new bed partner
Sleep Apnea is a killer

I think it's a good idea to add the ".com" to the sleepguide logo/name. otherwise it might not be clear to people it's a website they can go to.

Sleep S'normal? Try a CPAP!
snorrrrrrrrring could be sleep apnea.
Well it appears that the majority of ideas have been received.

I am now going to sort thru them and compile a list of your eye grabbing suggestions, and then repost the list for your review.

Keep in mind the list will consist of generic slogans to which a non *PAP user can relate. This is the target group we are trying to reach. Before we were diagnosed, the majority of us had no idea what a CPAP, APAP or Bi-PAP was. We want the general public to search out help, not make them scratch their head wondering what it means.

To each and every person who submitted an idea - Thank You for all the great input.

More to follow.
