How important is diet when treating obstructive Sleep Apnea? The Physician’s and Clinician’s have a devil of a time with nPAP compliance issues. We also have the augurous task of also talking with patients about weight loss.
I would like to hear if nPAP users feel diet is important in their treatment.
I have gained a lot of weight since I started CPAP. I had been sick and lost about 30 lbs, but when I recovered put on an extra 35. My doctor has warned me about the dangers of excess weight. I am eating carefully now, trying to get a somewhat balanced diet and trying to lose weight (have lost 10 lbs in three weeks). I wouldn't have thought of improving my diet to treat my OSA. Although, it does seem like a good idea to be as healthy as possible with your diet.
I was told by 2 doctors that I would lose weight just by starting to use a CPAP. Uhhh, no.
In fact I gained weight. There is no magic cure for being overweight. I am now monitoring my food intake, making healthy choices, eating small portions and doing tons of exercise. That seems to be doing the trick. No one, I mean no one wants to hear that they "need" to lose weight from a doctor or anyone. But the truth is any extra weight causes difficulty with breathing, and contributes to a multitude of other illnesses. Diet and nutrition is important in OSA treatment. But only if you want to be healthy and live as long as possible. :>D
