Anyone out there with both ADHD/ADD and Apnea - How has it affected your thinking before and after CPAP?

If you have ADHD/ADD and apnea, or know someone who does - Did your thinking and memory change after going on CPAP? My experience is below and I would appreciate it if you could add your views. There is some interaction between ADD/Apnea, not well understood, that makes it harder to get along with life that Apnea alone. I have not found any studies on it published - do you know of any?

year cpap 0

I was working in IT and GIS as a contractor. My boss decided we had to meet at 7:30 am - that's when I hit my limit - I was so sleepy during the day! And I literally forgot what I did at early morning workout.

At the same time, I was riding 5 to 10 miles on my bike for fun, and my BP started to go way up so I could not give blood.

I got too tired to ride, and I lost my ability to quickly change from one type of work to another, missed all kinds of social cues and had a working memory that got smaller and smaller. I took health leave to get tested for what on earth was making me sleepy, stupid with high BP.

Yup - apnea diagnosed.

OK - I went on CPAP - and still had trouble thinking. I stated to get really dumb and its the scariest thing that ever happened to me.

I could not find anyone  who knew why I got so dumb that I liked repetative tasks that normally drive me crazy. I was unable to do the work , however, I could describe how to structure a program or project and still had the ability to figure out the rules for  3 pictures of shapes where you see the first two groups, and pick out the next.

I went to neurophsych testing and got checked to see if there were holes or extra bits in my brain. I couldn't understand things that I wrote 6 months before! And sure it was Altzheimers.

Returnng to work, I found it harder to keep a mental image of relationships between files in a database and had to write down more details than before.

So now I find out I have ADD and have meds for focus - its really great, I feel like my old self, but somehow don't feel as sharp. Its been 6 years since I stated CPAP.

What has your experience been like?

Hi Holly, Yep we got "dwane bramage "from all the oxygen deprevation .Their was a study I read that said our executive section of brain gets messed with I will see if I can dig it up to quote better.

Things I used to be sharp on require much effort to be mediocre at.......Chris

My daughter was diagnosed with ADD. She was also diagnosed with apnea shortly after due to enlarged toncils. We had them removed and reducated her on good sleep and she is now a straight A student.

That's a great story Rock :)
