@Mike C, Good to hear you broke free of modern America's standard medical practices.

If you have any problem with weight or triglycerides, you may want to look into the writings of Gary Taubes - http://www.google.com/search?q=gary+taubes&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-...

It is how I try to eat and my weight and triglycerides are well controlled.

One simple basic rule is to avoid grains, seed oils (corn, soybean, rapeseed), and sugars.

Good luck!

You are right...KILL em all?  :-)

I am so lucky to have grown up in the 1950's and been able to play outside till bed time safely, never see but one single so called "fat kid" in any large school and grew up eating 3 & 4 egg breakfasts and meat & potato dinners since I was 5 years young. Something horrible has happened and I suppose even beyond portion control? Of course I imagine all my natural food was then far more natural & missing a ton of hormones etc. I sure don't know all the answers. I DO know I was never fat till beginning a heart drug called Atenolol. 40 pounds later I have stopped ALL prescribed meds and just got all new doctors in an entirely new Health Plan. I will no longer take any prescription medication. When nature decides MY time has come, I go gladly. In just 6 weeks since I stopped that heart drug I have also dropped 14 pounds. Personally I am taking responsibility for my heath and accepting whatever comes. I will no longer be fed narcotics, statins that make me forget where my mailbox is, blood pressure medications that turned my triglycerides from 60 to 578! I simply have NO need for the fiasco of modern medicine that nearly killed me several times in the past 18 months.

For those who may be overweight because of medication they are honestly too afraid to quit, please accept my apology. If you are overweight because you just make "excuses".....well best of luck! I suppose I am just very bitter since I was fed 6 different drugs that almost killed me and literally robbed me of leaving my Lazyboy. And for what it is worth, the President of my Scripps Hospital clinic personally examined me yesterday himself. He is co-ordinating an entirely new plan for me with the best specialists in each field in the next 6 weeks. So far? He agrees 100% that I was completely misled and EVERY single drug prescribed in error. How often do you hear that? I am just SO PISSED! Just too long of a story. Thank goodness for Google & me figuring out I had OSA and no all the rest I was being drugged to death for. My wife fought me every step of my resisting the quacks treating me for my heart & blood clots in my lungs. Not till I gained 40 pounds in just 3 months with NO diet changes did she believe me that "something was horribly wrong". Like Mulder said in The X Files, question everything.

Maybe I should take up drinking and just shut up.....

I have had 65 pound 4 year olds come into the sleep lab with a bladder buster soada and a bag of chips..I can see OSA becoming a severe risk for kiddos.

Interestingly, the only reference to that "study" is by a poster called DrNoOSA in a blog.  That poster elsewhere pushes a book called "Deadly Sleep".

So much schlock.

The Li study that determined the prevalence and risk factors of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in Chinese children showed OSAS prevalence for boys and girls was 5.8% and 3.8%, respectively.

Stop scaring people.

Please link to something that discusses the study to which you refer for that figure (27.5%), if you don't mind, Dr. Jones. I would assume you are referring to a study's statements of what percentage of OBESE children are estimated to have possibly-significant numbers of obstructive events, not what percentage of children in general would be formally diagnosed OSA by using present diagnostic criteria. But I don't know without seeing the study.

A recent sleep study of 5 to 12 year old Chinese children in ten major cities in China, revealed 27.5% had OSA. The commonly quoted incidence in the USA is 2%,  a number that is old, outdated and ludicrous to quote for the children of today. Dr Parks' estimate of 25% is much closer to reality. If we ever get around to doing an up to date study, I'll bet the incidence in our children is even greater than in China, especially in view of our current obesity epidemic.
